Sometime after 1909, when Pendleton began milling woolen blankets in Oregon, one of their finest weavers, Joe Rawnsley, ventured to the Southwest, collecting ideas from Native Americans that could be reinterpreted by the company. The brightly colored, highly patterned blankets Rawnsley designed became coveted possessions and a kind of medium of exchange among native peoples of the Southwest. In Trading a Pendleton Blanket, W. R. Leigh shows a native salesman, perhaps Navajo, plying his Pendleton with great showmanship.
