St. Louis native Oscar Berninghaus was known early on as an expert draftsman. When the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company commissioned him to do the artwork for series of advertising lithographs based on scenes from the settlement of the West, both his reputation and his interest in painting the American West soared. On his very first Western swing, a chance encounter and a broken wagon wheel—so legend has it—led him to Taos. The people and landscape, the light and color filled his senses. Eventually, Berninghaus would move to Taos permanently and become one of the founders of the Taos Society of Artists. Taos Country is exactly that—Taos through Berninghaus’s eyes, transmitted through his brush, transferred to canvas. Feathers of sage, a long plain, low mountains, tremendous, almost palpable sky and clouds, riders moving through, sheep in the distance. Taos Country is the why of Taos art.
