Health compelled Thomas Hill to leave the Hudson River Valley and make a move to California in 1861. After spending time in France and again on the East Coast, he found that the peaks and falls of Yosemite suited his style and were inexhaustible subjects that seemed to alter their moods with the day and season. A close friend of naturalist and conservationist John Muir, the images Hill created contributed greatly to the American desire to set wild and beautiful places aside for posterity. Hill turned his brush and palette time and again to Vernal Falls in Yosemite, finding immense satisfaction in the contrasts between the geometries of its rocks—including Half-Dome— and the power of its cascading waters.
