Russ Vickers began his career as a commercial illustrator in the aerospace industry in Los Angeles. In 1970, his paintings were featured over the opening and closing credits in the John Wayne film Chisum and he began showing his work in Sedona. Three years later, Vickers moved to Arizona, where he devoted himself to easel paintings of Western historical subjects. Ancient Right-of-Way is one of Vickers’s most involved and poignant works. In it, old and new, indigenous and intruder, tradition and change intersect, peaceably—this time.
