A particular favorite of President Lyndon Johnson, Melvin Warren saw the Old West as a richly textured, earth-toned world of cattle drives and moonlit frontier encounters. Commercial artist by day, Western master by night, Warren lived in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, where Western art eventually won the day and he took his place in the ranks of the CAA. Lost in the Stampede, for example, is a major work, Warren’s take on the classic Western art theme of lightning spooking the herd that can easily stand with Russell’s, Remington’s, and Frank Tenney Johnson’s.
Warren’s singular contribution places a riderless horse at the center of the composition. Two other cowboys look on, knowing that they must put grief and horror aside for the moment as they scramble to save the herd.
