Warrior’s Prayer is a Martin Grelle’s take on a classic motif in American Western Art—the solitary warrior on a hilltop offering his prayers to the divine beings that rule over the earth and all its creatures. All the elements are here: wind, raking light, a turbulent sky. The warrior’s face is upturned to the sun, warmed by its waning light, though his eyes are shut in reverence and reverie. His relaxed hand, half open, seems ready to receive nature’s benediction. The details on the ornaments that adorn him—the shield, necklace, shells wrapped into his braids, the fringes on his bag and leggings—set what is a very still scene into motion. On the ground, the buffalo skull and the four arrows stuck into the earth in the four directions serve as thanks for the earth’s bounty, and as, perhaps, another prayer, for peace everywhere.
