Ogden Pleissner is perhaps the most important 20th century interpreter of the American sporting scene, especially in the medium of watercolor. As a spiritual heir to Homer, Frost, and Benson, Pleissner’s paintings of fly fishing and upland bird shooting are unmatched and undiminished with time, perhaps because they are, first and foremost, sporting landscapes, drawing their particular beauties as much from the grays and blues of the autumn sky and the few yellow leaves that cling to the creek side bushes in Woodcock Shooting as they do from the attention of the setter and the moment of truth between the hunter and his quarry.
