There’s a little sliver of moon, like the white lunula at the base of your fingernail, in the gray dawn sky in Henry Farny’s gouache, Zuni Women 1895, a little lunula of moon that unites the disparate ethnographic elements of the picture: dress (the robes, beadwork, shoes), pottery (its size, shape, decoration), manners (one woman balancing the jar on her head, the other swaddling her child in her own robe) architecture (pueblo), environment (desert) and places them on a particular day at a particular time as pieces in a particular tale. The moon leads the eye to the rippled reflections, to the women regarding one another—younger and older—maid and mother, to the child straining, as children do, to escape.
