Kind eyes, wrinkled faces, gray beards and thousand-yard stares are some of the hallmarks of a James Bama portrait. All of them are on display here in The Old Ox Yoke, painted in 1994. Bama, who started as an illustrator for pulp and adventure magazines before turning to fine art in Cody, Wyoming, also painted younger subjects, including Native Americans, and yet he always circled back to older Western figures. “This was our heritage, people like this,” Bama said.
