Provenance:
Private collection, New Mexico
Literature:
Nicolai Fechin, Harold McCracken, Hammer Galleries, New York, NY, 1961, pg. 198.
One of Nicolai Fechin’s students was Montana painter Katharine Buzzell (Shackelford) Benepe, who is seen here in Benepe. She acquired the name Benepe through marriage in 1940, which dates the painting to that year or later. In addition to Fechin, the model and painter also studied under J. Francis Smith and Elmer Schofield. Fechin painted her at least several times, including in a more formal portrait, Katherine.
