This 1992 painting was inspired by Rist Canyon near Fort Collins, Colorado. The gray, overcast day could be tricky for his students, especially when colors were muted and dull, and yet Schmid used an overcast day as a teaching tool. “Why overcast? Because sunlight is diffused evenly throughout the cloud layer, and it produces the near ideal color balance…” he wrote in Alla Prima II: Everything I Know About Painting—and More. “Overcast also tends to be stable, providing generous time for painting.” For Schmid, every scenario was a teachable moment.
